What makes Safeco Field one of the premier playing surfaces in baseball? A specially designed drainage system, custom blend of Kentucky bluegrass, and cutting-edge mow pattern. That, and Head Groundskeeper Bob Christofferson.
Safeco Field his home to the Seattle Mariners baseball team. It’s also home to Head Groundskeeper Bob Christofferson. When it comes to the field, Bob’s got one philosophy: don’t walk on the grass unless you have to. One of his crew members once said, “Grass grows by the inch and dies by the foot.” Bob doesn’t like that saying, but it’s true.
The mow pattern he uses is designed for the players and play-ability more so than it is for the fans, and Bob’s team was the first to use this pattern in baseball. It’s specially designed to reduce the amount of “snaking” that occurs when a ground ball follows the lay of the grass. The result? Outfielders playing on Safeco Field can charge for a ball without hesitation — which can make the difference between throwing a guy out and missing the play.
Bob’s all about his ballpark, and the field that we call home; without him and his crew, Safeco Field just wouldn’t be the same.
Constantly rated one of the top ballparks in the country, Safeco Field and its staff are dedicated 24/7 365 to baseball. So for them, supporting the stadium you know and love is just second nature. For all of us here at Safeco Insurance, we’re proud to stand behind them.
